2 people arrested in Mati City for alleged cyanide fishing

Authorities have arrested two male individuals for alleged illegal fishing in Mati City’s Dahican shoreline.

The city government said residents alerted the police about the possible cyanide fishing.

Upon responding, the Maritime Police saw the two suspects while pouring chemical substance on a small tidal pool in the shoreline on April 27.

According to the city government, a video footage from the police showed the suspects deliberately hiding the container with the suspected chemical upon the approach of the authorities.

The two suspects were brought to the Philippine National Police Maritime station for further investigation, documentation and filing of appropriate complaint.

Confiscated from them were one bottle of chlorine-like substance and assorted fish.

The two suspects will face charges for violation of Section 67- Fishing through Explosives, Noxious or Poisonous Substance and/or Electricity of the Mati City Ordinance No. 406 Series of 2020.
