50 nagpakasal! Mayor Uy leads ‘Kasalang Bayan’ in IGACOS

Island Garden City of Samal Mayor Al David T. Uy has officiated a mass wedding for 50 couples in the city.

The City Civil Registrar’s Office facilitated the recent “Kasalang Bayan,” a program of the city government that offers the opportunity to couples who have been cohabiting for five years or more to be wed for free and eventually legitimize their children. Also, the application for the marriage license, the registration of the marriage certificate, and the processing fees were free.

Uy congratulated the couples and promised to give additional cash assistance to the newlyweds.

Based on the statistical records of the CCRO, approximately 80 percent of the children were conceived and born outside of a valid marriage and only 20 percent were born legitimately.

CCRO head Joel Padillo also considered the cohabitation of an unmarried person a social problem, as it would result in the limitation of rights for the illegitimate child as well as for the common-law spouse.

During the wedding ceremony, the newlywed couples were also feted with the traditional cake-cutting and wine tasting, all sponsored by the city government.

Vice Mayor Lemuel Reyes, department heads, godparents, and the families of the couples gathered and joined in the special occasion.
