After deadly blast! Mayor Dalipe suspends biz permit of pyrotechnic dealer in Zamboanga City

Zamboanga City Mayor John Dalipe has ordered the suspension of the business permit of the fireworks dealer following a deadly explosion of a pyrotechnic warehouse in the city.

The directive came as Dalipe convened a meeting on Monday, July 1, with representatives of different agencies and offices concerned to discuss issues arising from the blast.

The business permit of Jonathan “Jojie” Chua, operator of Next Step Pyrotechnics, was ordered suspended.

The pyrotechnics company owned the stockpile of fireworks that exploded in a warehouse at Marquez Drive in Barangay Tetuan on Saturday afternoon, June 29, that left five people dead and over 30 others injured.

During the meeting at the City Hall, District Fire Marshall Christopher Morales recommended the imposition of a total ban on firecrackers, fireworks, and other pyrotechnics devices in the city to prevent a repetition of the incident.

But the city government said the Sangguniang Panlungsod has to pass a new ordinance since under the existing local law, fireworks for entertainment or celebratory purposes, subject to certain terms and conditions, are allowed.

Dalipe is also expected to issue an executive order mandating the City Engineer’s Office, the police, and the barangay officials to inspect all warehouses and storage facilities in the city, it added.

Meanwhile, City Police Director Col. Kimberly Molitas said the ground zero of the explosion and its periphery remained closed to civilians and motorists, including residents of nearby houses, as clearing operations continued.
