Atendido rejects divorce bill

General Santos City Councilor Richard Atendido has rejected the House of Representatives’ move legalizing divorce in the Philippines.

In a radio interview, Atendido voiced his opposition against the measure, citing his Christian belief on the importance of family.

“As a Christian, dili ko mosugot nga ing-ana kadali. Ayaw na lang ipadayon ang divorce bill,” he said.

The proposed Absolute Divorce Act (House Bill 9349) was approved by the House of Representatives with 126 affirmative, 109 negative, and 20 abstention votes.

Atendido also said the proposed measure is still far from becoming a law, as it must still be taken up in the Senate.

“House bill pa lang naman siya. Daghan pa mahitabo,” he added.
