Basilan gov’t gives financial aid to MV Mary Joy survivors

The Basilan government has extended financial assistance to some of the passengers of the ill-fated ferry, which caught fire Wednesday night, March 29, and claimed at least 29 lives in the sea off Baluk-Baluk Island in Hadji Muhtamad town in the province.

This, as Governor Jim Salliman personally visited the survivors of MV Lady Mary Joy 3 at the passengers’ terminal in Isabela City.

The provincial government gave P3,000 each to 67 passengers.

Personnel of the Kalikasa Center took charge of the distribution of the cash aid.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported that at least 29 passengers died in the tragic incident.

“Umabot sa 29 na pasahero ang binawian ng buhay — 11 ang na-recover sa tubig, habang 18 naman ang na-recover sa loob ng barko,” it said.

The PCG added that the 36 crew members of the vessel were safe.

The vessel with more than 200 passengers and crew on board was en route to Jolo from Zamboanga City when the incident happened.
