Blaan communities support Tampakan mining project

Members of the Blaan communities in Tampakan, South Cotabato on Tuesday said they recognize the importance to the economy of prospective mineral mining project within their ancestral domains.

In an interview, Indigenous People’s Mandatory Representative to the municipal council of Tampakan Domingo Collado said that they are also happy over the pronouncement that the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project will soon commence its engineering preparations and major construction.

He said that they had been wanting, since 1996, to have the copper and gold deposits in the municipality explored for their benefit, aware of what they can gain from it as provided for by the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act, also known as the Republic Act 8371.

“Natutuwa talaga kami sa tribu. Lalo na kaming mga IPs. Kasi maliwanag na talagang mag-ooperate na ang Tampakan Project,” Collado said.

Last month, the three host barangays of the Project signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Sagittarius Mines Inc. (SMI) for the mining firm’s multi-million peso Social Development and Management Program (SDMP) for local communities in the next five years.
