DENR boosts mining safety and health inspections

The government is committed to enforce the safety and health standards in mining activities in the country.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Mines and Geosciences Bureau XII (DENR-MGB) assured mining communities in the region that the government’s strict safety rules and regulations have long been set to identify and address potential safety and health hazards in mining operations.

According to MGB, mining companies are bound by law to implement safety and health programs to ensure the well-being of both mine workers and the host communities.

DENR Administrative Order No. 2000-98 lays down the mine safety and health standards in mining operations. It also provides for the creation of a multi-partite monitoring team composed of representatives from the MGB, concerned local government units, the operating mining company, Indigenous Cultural Communities and other concerned agencies and entities, tasked to regularly conduct inspections to check on environment and safety measures in the mines site.

Earlier this month, MGB’s Mine Safety, Environment and Social Development Division (MSESDD) conducted safety and health inspections in mining companies in the Soccsksargen region.

“Through its quarterly Safety and Health Inspections, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau XII diligently works to identify and address potential safety and health hazards in mining operations, ultimately enhancing workplace safety standards and providing peace of mind to workers and their families,” according to the statement released by MGB.

The agency said that companies, facilities and offices inspected for this 1st quarter include Sagittarius Mines, Incorporated (SMI) in Tampakan, South Cotabato and Jeresa Agri Industrial Development Ventures Incorporated in Libungan, Cotabato.

For its part, SMI said that even though its Tampakan Project has not yet started, it has long been carrying out multi-sectoral partnerships with its host and neighboring communities in various environmental protection activities and strictly adheres to both local and national government environmental laws.
