GenSan eyes hosting Palarong Pambansa 2026

General Santos City is considering hosting the Palarong Pambansa in 2026.

City Councilor Richard Atendido on Tuesday announced that the city government plans to submit a bid for the 2026 multi-sport event.

“Nagbi-bid tayo for the 2026 Palarong Pambansa,” Atendido announced during the Sanggunian’s 71st regular session.

Since the Palarong Pambansa’s inception in 1948, General Santos has hosted the event only once in 1996. Cebu City will host this year’s Palaro and Ilocos Norte in 2025.

Meanwhile, the council has urgently approved P180 million supplemental budget as part of the city’s preparation as host for the upcoming Soccsksargen Regional Athletic Association (SRAA) Meet this year.

“Madame Chair, actually the reason for the urgency of this item is the fast approaching SRAA. The budget for SRAA is included within this Supplemental Budget No. 1. In the event, na hindi natin ma-approve today, the budget for the repair of the oval track as well as the swimming pool, will not be implemented… Dapat last week pa (approval),” Atendido explained.

Atendido said under Supplemental Budget 1, the city has allocated around P69 million to include the repair of the Pedro Acharon Sports Complex.

“For track and field, we have available funds of P28 million, iyong additional electrical installations sa complex and filters ng swimming pool, it’s about P7 million, and we already have appproved P34 million for the repair iyong grand stand,” Atendido added.
