Gov Salliman leads kick-off program to mark Basilan’s 50th founding anniversary

Basilan Governor Jim Salliman has led the kick-off celebration of the Tennun Pakaradjaan 2024 and the province’s 50th Founding Anniversary.

“Mahalin po natin ang Basilan tulad ng ating pagmamahal sa bawat isa sa atin,” the governor said during the opening program on Tuesday, February 27.

The 10-day event has the theme, “Basilan @ 50: Advancing Our Gains, Expanding Our Capacities Towards a Better Life for All.”

The first day kicked off with a caravan around the Basilan circumferential road followed by the unveiling of the Photo Gallery Wall, the Agro-Industrial Tarde Fair, TEPO and Tennun Expo Booth at the Basilan National High School Grandstand.

Salliman said Basilan has gone a long way to achieve the level of peace, progress and development that the province and Basileños are enjoying nowadays.

He recalled that the province had been in the darkest of its history when it was branded as the country’s capital of kidnappings, bombings, and a battlefield between government forces and the terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group.

According to the governor, the campaign against extremism started in 2016 and in 2017 Basilan was removed from the list of the country’s poorest provinces.

Fast forward to the present, Salliman said Basilan is advancing its gains in peace and security through the implementation of the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Program, which has resulted in the recovery of more than 500 loose firearms.

He expressed hope that the province would soon be totally cleared of loose firearms and Basilan would further progress.
