Governor Niño Uy Keen on Sustainable Environmental Partnership with Kennemer Group

Governor Niño Uy, representing the provincial government of Davao Oriental, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the international company Kennemer Group, represented by its Chairman, Mr. Simon A. Bakker, on May 10, 2024.

The MOU outlines a comprehensive collaboration between the provincial government and the Kennemer Group, through a consortium, focusing on implementing climate-smart agricultural practices to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities.

Recognizing that poverty is a leading cause of deforestation or environmental degradation, communities need viable alternative livelihoods.

Initiatives to improve livelihoods include programs for cocoa farm management, abaca production, post-harvest processing, and expanding support for the local agricultural supply chain.

Additionally, efforts include joint conservation initiatives in critical forest areas, such as training and deputizing forest guards, among other strategies, aimed at strengthening conservation efforts. Reforestation projects are also part of the agenda.

Governor Uy stressed the crucial role of local government units and the provincial government in achieving conservation goals. “We need to strike a balance between development and environmental protection while addressing the livelihood needs of our communities,” said the Governor.

Meanwhile, the Kennemer Group, known for its expertise in agriculture and implementing climate solutions through collaboration with various agencies, serves as a force that unifies stakeholders.
