Inflation hurts low-income households in GenSan

Low-income households in General Santos City are being hit hard by inflation, as costs for housing, water, electricity, and food surged up in May, Philippine Statistics Authority reported on Tuesday.

The inflation rate for households in the bottom 30% of the income households increased to 5.3 percent last month from 4.3 percent inflation rate in April, according to PSA.

PSA said the city’s May inflation rate for the low income families was higher than the regional level at 5.0 percent and equal to the national level at 5.3 percent.

The report also noted that Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels; Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Personal Care, and Miscellaneous Goods and Services, among others were the main contributors to the city’s uptrend inflation.

Earlier, PSA also reported that the city’s headline inflation had risen to 4.3 percent in May from previous month’s inflation at 3.1 percent.
