Inmate, civilian caught in Zamboanga prison drug bust

An inmate and another man have been caught during an illegal drugs buy-bust operation conducted at a prison facility in Zamboanga City, said the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Wednesday (April 10).

BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. said joint operatives of the BuCor and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) arrested inmate Kerwin Mohammad Abadilla and Albadir Mala Ajijul last Tuesday (April 9) during the operation conducted at San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) in Zamboanga City.

At that time, Abadilla was brought out along with 14 other inmates of the SRPPF Minimum Security Compound to a vegetable farm of the prison facility as part of their reformation program.

“Recovered from those arrested was an undetermined amount of white crystalline substance believed to be shabu,” said the BuCor.

Meanwhile, Catapang said investigation is ongoing to determine who are also involved in the narcotics trading at the SRPPF.

“Four BuCor officers identified as CSO4 John Hicap, CO2 Jimmy Wong, CO2 Joel Broncano and CO1 Marlon Hemandez were immediately relieved of their duties while a thorough investigation is being conducted by the SRPPF,” said the bureau.

“Catapang said that this is only one of the many operations that will be conducted by PDEA and BuCor to weed out the bureau of undesirable personnel,” the bureau revealed.
