Mayor Dalipe leads observance of Dia de Gen. Vicente Alvarez in Zamboanga City

Zamboanga City Mayor John Dalipe has led the Zamboangueños in commemorating the Dia de Gen. Vicente Alvarez.

The celebration on Saturday, May 18, kicked off with a wreath-laying ceremony at the former Plaza Roma at the corner of Don Pablo Lorenzo, Zaragoza and Gen. Alvarez Streets.

Themed “honoring courage, leadership and independence”, the commemorative activity marked the day when Alvarez led the fight for sovereignty resulting to the surrender of Spanish forces headed by Governor General Diego de los Rios on May 18, 1899 at Fort Pilar.

Joining Dalipe in the wreath-laying ceremony were Councilor Vino Guingona and the Alvarez family.

The activity culminated with the Gen. Vicente Alvarez Heroism Award ceremony, an event that honors and commemorates the extraordinary attributes demonstrated by law enforcement and military personnel while doing their duties, in keeping with Alvarez’ legacy.

The awarding ceremony was the first of its kind and was held at the Garden Orchid Hotel, the city government said.
