Mayor Duterte hits mass relief of Davao City police officers

Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte has slammed the removal of several police station commanders in his city, saying this would not help sustain the peace and order situation in Davao.

Philippine National Police Chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil, through Police Regional Office XI Regional Director Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III, recently ordered the relief of the city police chief, head of the Special Operations Group, and 19 police station commanders in Davao City.

“This move by General Marbil and Police Regional Office XI Regional Director Nicolas Torre undermines the hard work not only of these police officials but also of every police personnel who is truthfully fulfilling their mandate, that instead of being recognized, are being relieved and questioned,” Duterte said in a statement.

“The mass relief of police officials, including the City Police Director, the head of the Special Operations Group, and 19 station commanders, assigned in Davao City will not help in sustaining the city’s peace and security situation,” he stressed.

The PNP leadership did not cite the reason for the relief of the city police officers, who were reassigned mostly to different posts in the Davao Region.

The reshuffle happened a few weeks after Torre was assigned to Region XI.

Duterte said Torre’s perception and conclusion on the peace and order situation in his city after he set foot in Davao was “rather fascinating given that he has only been assigned in PRO XI in less than a month.

“If General Torre thought that Davao City police personnel were ineffective in their duties, then how come the very institution he leads has consistently recognized the Davao City Police Office as the top performing police office in the region?” he said.

The mayor said the relieved police officers “do not deserve this treatment,” stressing that he stands with every member of the Davao City Police Office.
