Mayor John Dalipe Leads Zamboanga City in Successful Earth Day River Cleanup

Mayor John M. Dalipe, actively participated in Earth Day 2024 celebrations on April 20th through Project River Improvement Operation (RIO).

This river cleanup initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Jovenes Allianza De Zamboanga (JADZ) youth network and supported by the USAID Opportunity 2.0 program (O2), aimed to address solid waste management challenges in Zamboanga City. Aligned with the National Youth Volunteering Activity involving O2-supported youth networks across 15 sites in the Philippines, Project RIO focused on comprehensive river cleanup efforts and waste audit. Participants received an orientation on solid waste management and relevant Zamboanga City Ordinances from Mr. Albert Ebol of the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources during the morning session. In the afternoon, the outreach activity expanded to a house-to-house campaign, where out-of-school youth (OSY) advocated for waste management principles learned earlier and emphasized their importance. The Mayor John M. Dalipe Task Force (MJDTF), alongside JADZ and other partners, played a significant role in the river cleanup, resulting in the collection of 750 kilograms of mixed garbage, including plastic wastes, unused clothing, papers, glasses, and organic materials.
