Mayor Orly Furigay’s Leadership Draws Thousands to Monte Santo on Good Friday

On this solemn occasion of #GoodFriday, thousands of Catholic devotees from across Basilan Province gathered at Monte Santo for the final Via Cruzes, a time-honored tradition commemorating the Way of the Cross.

According to Lamitan City Police Station Chief, Lt. Col. Arlan Delumpines, this year’s pilgrimage saw a significant increase in attendance, doubling compared to previous years. This surge in participation is seen as a testament to the community’s appreciation for the development initiatives undertaken at Monte Santo by the local government unit (LGU) of Lamitan, led by Mayor Orly Furigay.

The holy hill, meticulously developed by the LGU, boasts 660 steps equipped with hand railings to ensure the comfort and safety of visitors. Additionally, it features the revered 14 Stations of the Cross and a chapel, providing pilgrims with a serene environment for reflection and prayer.

Delumpines further noted that the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and other law enforcement units have set up a dedicated assistance desk, underscoring the commitment to ensuring the well-being of all participants throughout the pilgrimage.
