Mayor Uy receives fund for establishment of marine hatchery in IGACOS

The Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) led by Mayor Al David T. Uy has received P30 million for the construction of a multi-species marine hatchery in the island.

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region XI Regional Director Relly Garcia turned over the P30-million worth of check to Uy in a recent ceremony.

The establishment of the Multi-Species Marine Hatchery in Samal is in accordance with Republic Act No. 11808.

Uy acknowledged the efforts of Congressman Alan Dujali and BFAR for crafting and passing the legislation, making Samal one of the three recipients of the project in Davao del Norte.

“Dakong tabang pud ni sa mga gagmay nato na mananagat labi natong naay mga kooperatiba, naay mga grupo. Timing na naay closed season, kay naa man mi closed season na gina-implement sa BFAR, so this is one way of, while closed season, na dili maputol ang ilahang panginabuhian, livelihood, which is very important,” he said.

The hatchery will facilitate the breeding and propagation of diverse marine species, such as milkfish, tilapia, danggit, lapu-lapu, and pompano, among others. The facility will also provide valuable support to local aquaculture initiatives, promoting the responsible cultivation of marine resources to meet the needs of the community in terms of food security and employment.
