MGB, SMI strengthen Tampakan Project monitoring team

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office XII and mining firm Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) conducted training and information, education and communication campaigns to members of the Multipartite Monitoring Team (MMT) and other stakeholders of the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project in South Cotabato.

MGB said the activity aligns with the ongoing capacity-building program designed to empower MMT members in effectively monitoring and ensuring the environmental compliance of SMI. It was aimed to promote environmental awareness, preservation, conservation and protection in the host communities surrounding the SMI Tampakan Copper-Gold Project, according to MGB.

“Topics on Clean Water, Water Quality Guidelines and General Effluent Standards, Composition and Function of the MMT, and the environmental programs and rehabilitation activities of the SMI were presented by the speakers,” the bureau said.

Members of the SMI MMT include representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Environmental Management Bureau, Provincial Environment and Management Office of South Cotabato, Provincial and Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Offices, local government units, host communities, and indigenous cultural communities.

SMI earlier announced that with all major approvals and permits from the national government secured, it is ready to start construction this year and produce its first copper concentrate in mid-2027.
