MGB vows strict monitoring of mining activities in Soccsksargen

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has pledged to intensify its monitoring of mining operations in the Soccsksargen region.

During the Kapihan sa PIA 12, MGB 12 Supervising Geologist Vincent Gascal emphasized the agency’s commitment to enforcing strict safety regulations to address potential hazards in mining activities.

Gascal highlighted that mining companies are legally required to implement safety and health programs to protect mine workers and host communities.

“We are the mandated agency regulating mining in the area, so we are stricter with them in terms of monitoring and project implementation,” Gascal stated.

According to DENR Administrative Order No. 2000-98, mine safety and health standards must be maintained. A multipartite monitoring team, including representatives from MGB, local government units, mining companies, Indigenous Cultural Communities, and other concerned entities, is tasked with conducting regular inspections to ensure compliance with environmental and safety measures.

Gascal also noted that the agency identifies potentially hazardous areas to ensure that any proposed development projects include mitigating measures to minimize environmental impacts.
