Pacquiao gives relief aid to El Niňo-hit farmers

General Santos City Mayor Lorelie Pacquiao on Monday led the distribution of relief assistance to farmers affected by the prolonged El Niño weather phenomenon.

During the activity, Pacquiao distributed sacks of rice to farmer-beneficiaries and also promised to provide financial assistance for their children’s education.

“Sa mensahe ni Mayor Pacquiao, nangako siyang maipapabilang ang mga magsasaka na maging benepisyaryo ng TUPAD Program tungo sa 1Pacman Partylist,” the city government said.

Earlier, City Administrator Franklin Gacal said the city is not looking at declaring a state of calamity despite taking a toll due to extreme dry weather conditions.

Gacal assured that the city already placed protocols to mitigate the effects of El Niño, as early as July last year. The dry spell caused by El Niño has reportedly affected 100 hectares of General Santos’ agricultural lands.
