Panalo! Atty. Naguib Sinarimbo’s Vision Comes to Fruition as Bangsamoro Public Market Wins Global Design Award

Former Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) leader Naguib Sinarimbo proudly announced the international recognition of the Bangsamoro Public Market, which has been honored with the prestigious A’Design Award. The A’Design Award, known as the world’s largest and most influential design accolades, is bestowed by an international jury comprising 278 distinguished members from across the globe for the 2024-2025 period. This recognition highlights the market’s excellence and originality in design on a global scale.

Reflecting on the inception of the project, Sinarimbo recalled his time at the Ministry of the Interior and Local Government in 2019. During this period, he identified a significant gap in the LGUs of the region—the high dependency on IRA or what would later be termed under the Mandas Ruling as the NTA. To address this issue, he proposed incentivizing pioneering LGUs in enterprise development to stimulate the local economy. This vision gained further significance in the face of the challenges posed by the pandemic in 2020, leading to the birth of the PADIAN or Public Market for LGUs initiative.

However, the Politiko’s vision extended beyond merely functional and income-generating public markets. He was driven by a passion to recreate his childhood memories of the padian and to use it as a platform to showcase the distinct culture and heritage of the Bangsamoro people. In pursuit of this goal, he collaborated with architect Gloryrose Dy-Metilla, whom he had met through a common friend in Davao. Dy-Metilla, who had recently returned from graduate studies in Heritage Architecture at the University of Melbourne, impressed Sinarimbo with her ability to translate his ideas into tangible designs that captured the essence of Bangsamoro vernacular architecture.
