Para walang lusot: Suan seeks a clear-cut law on senior citizen discounts

By Billy Begas

A lawmaker from Cagayan de Oro City has introduced a measure for a clear-cut law that grants senior citizens discounts even on goods and services at promotional prices.

Rep. Lordan Suan said House Bill 9850 “intends to improve the existing law by resolving long-standing implementation of issues while also maximizing the benefits intended by the statute.”

At present, the law benefits and special privileges provided to senior citizens are based on Republic Act 7432.

Under HB 9850, a 20% discount and value-added tax exemption will be applicable to promotional discount fares on domestic sea and air transport services, as well as prices of hotels, lodging houses, restaurants, recreational centers, basic and prime commodities, toll fees, water, and electricity bills.

The measure also includes a provision to guarantee that indigent senior citizens receive their P1,000 monthly pension at least every other month if not every month.
