Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong Champions Bill to Aid Climate Displaced Persons

Congressman Zia Alonto Adiong recently led efforts in the Congress to provide sanctuary for environmental migrants fleeing the dire consequences of climate change, particularly those from small island developing states (SIDS).

On his page, the Politiko shared updates on the House Bill 10490, proposed to amend Section 47 of Commonwealth Act 613 or the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940, was jointly filed by Representatives Edcel Lagman, Pablo John Garcia, Samuel Versoza Jr., Robert Ace Barbers, and the Politiko himself on May 27.

Highlighting the nation’s commitment to humanitarian principles, the Politiko stressed the importance of the Filipino tradition of extending refuge in times of crisis. The urgency of the issue was underscored by research from the Intercontinental Panel on Climate Change.

“As a nation with a history of providing sanctuary to refugees, it is imperative that we acknowledge and address the challenges posed by climate change,” the Politiko quipped.
