Residents of Upper Suyan in Malapatan, Sarangani are reaping the benefits of a community fishpond project initiated with support from Sarangani Lone District Congressman Steve Chiongbian Solon.
The community recently harvested tilapia from one of three fishponds established in Sitio Tamayao, turning the area’s abundant water supply into a potential source of food and livelihood for residents.
Residents said the fishponds were developed after they saw an opportunity to make productive use of the continuously available water in the area. With three ponds now in place, the community has started producing tilapia for household consumption and possible additional income.
“Thank you kaayo sa support ni Cong. Steve C. Solon, Engr. Gerald Faciol, DOLE, pinaagi sa TUPAD. Karon naka-partial harvest nami diri sa among tilapia sa Sitio Tamayao. Salamat pod sa support sa among Kapitan Bong Cawan,” a resident posted on social media.
Another resident welcomed the initiative, saying such projects could help improve the livelihood of families in the area.
“Woowww more pa ani nga mga projects para sa katawhan, kudos DOLE, TUPAD, and Congressman Steve Chiongbian Solon. Salamat kaayo sa mga ani nga opportunity, somehow maangat ang pamumuhay sa mga residente dihang dapita,” the resident commented.
The project was supported through the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program, according to Solon’s office.
