Zamboanga City’s crime volume down by 38.7% in H1

Crime volume in Zamboanga City has declined by double digits during the first half of 2018.

The Zamboanga City Police Office, in a report during the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) meeting Monday, July 2, said that the total crime volume from January to June reached 2,799, 38.72 percent lower compared to the 4,568 incidents during the same period last year.

Theft was the most prevalent among the index crimes with 484 incidents followed by robbery and physical injury cases of 116 and 113, respectively.

For the non-index crime, reckless imprudence resulting in criminal cases such as homicide, physical injury and damages to properties recorded 139 incidents or 49 percent of the total non-index crimes, Zamboanga police said.

Police said all the crime incidents in the city fell significantly, except for the campaign against illegal drugs under Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Police said there was an increase of 417 incidents or 24 percent.

“The increase in the campaign against illegal drugs indicates that the police were more effective this year than last year,” the city government said.

Zamboanga City police also acknowledged that threats from terrorist groups, such as the Abu Sayyaf Group, Islamic State, and other lawless elements, were still high.
